Sugars & sweeteners

Find separate references for granulated, packed brown, and powdered sugars, plus honey and maple syrup.

Sugar and sweetener measurements depend on the particular ingredient and the way it is measured. This directory separates granulated sugar, packed brown sugar, powdered sugar, honey, and maple syrup so the reference stays attached to the ingredient you selected.

Choose the sugar form

Granulated sugar, packed brown sugar, and powdered sugar are separate entries. Do not substitute one entry’s cup weight for another simply because both names contain “sugar.” The preparation state belongs to the measurement.

For brown sugar, keep “packed” visible when the recipe asks for it. For powdered sugar, retain any sifting instruction and its order. A source that specifies a particular method should be read together with that method.

Read liquid sweetener references separately

Honey and maple syrup each have their own mass–volume relationship. A millilitre is a volume unit, not a promise of an equal number of grams. Select a matching reference before crossing between the two.

If the recipe already supplies a weight, scale that weight directly. If it supplies a volume, first establish the cup or spoon definition and the source relationship you intend to use.

Preserve the recipe’s choice

This converter changes measurements, not the role of the ingredient in the recipe. A numerically equivalent amount does not establish that honey, maple syrup, or a different sugar will work as a substitute.

Keep optional sweetening instructions as notes when they do not state a fixed amount. “To taste” is an instruction, not zero grams and not a quantity the tool should invent.

Make the shopping list specific

Group rows only when the ingredient identity, state, and units are compatible. Two granulated-sugar weights can be added; powdered and granulated sugar should remain separate purchases.

Before exporting, check that the ingredient label still distinguishes packed brown sugar and any preparation note. The person using the list should not need to reopen the original recipe to discover which form you meant.
